Oliver Milton
I am
originally from Helensburgh, Scotland, where I attended Bethesda Evangelical Church. I
was brought up in a Christian home and attended church every week, but for me it
was just something I did. I never really thought about what it was to be a
Christian. I pretty much lived the way I thought I should live and tried to be
good, but never had a real relationship with God.
Things began to change when I met Alan Wadsworth who was the youth worker for the
Christian Youth Work Project in the town. Through him I met other young Christians and my
thoughts about Christianity were really challenged. I began to see that going to
church and being good were not grounds to call myself a Christian. Over time, I
began to take a bigger interest in the various Christian activities taking
place.
After the summer of that year, I began attending university studying
for a degree in physics. Around that time I was invited by Alan to the
Mid-Winter Camp. While at that camp I saw clearly for the first time my
need for a Saviour and that Christ had died for me. The evening of 28
December, 2000, I gave my life to Christ.
It was shortly after this I began to take an interest in the work of
Word of Life. The following summer, I worked in the kitchen at Scottish
Camp and was invited to staff weekends that occur twice a year. Since
then I have worked at each of the camps as a counsellor.
In the summer of 2004 I began thinking about my future. I was about to enter my
final year of university and was looking to see what paths were available. I was
aware that God was calling me into some form of full-time Christian work.
Through working with Word of Life that summer, I began to feel that this was the
organisation I was being called towards. Through talking with Alan and Dave, the
possibility of working with them was raised, which led to further meetings and
training and finally an interview with the Word of Life Board of Trustees. I was
accepted as a staff member as of December 2005.
My areas of responsibility are varied. Principally I am the office manager,
dealing with accounts, registration and such. However I am also involved in the
camps, Evangelistic Youth Events (EYEs) and the Saturday night youth club at my
local church in Larbert. Presently, I am furthering my biblical knowledge by
doing a Bible survey course, and preaching in local Churches. I have also
begun the work of updating the website and other IT related
tasks, slowly learning my way through these areas. In the near future I would like to develop a
science-based programme that I can take into the local schools.
